TILINGA MANDIR
( THE BELL TEMPLE)
The design and execution by
Tridib Dutta.
Tilinga Mandir (Bell Temple) is one of the iconic tourist destinations in the tourism map of Assam. Hundreds of thousands of Bells of different size and shapes, piled up in the shape of a mountain are indicative of fulfilment of wishes of the pilgrims who queue-up every day, in the temple.
Unlike other majestic Temples of Lord Shiva across the country with elaborate details of artistry, Tilinga Mandir is not a man-made structure. The Banyan Tree in the campus itself regarded as the temple with its Lingam at the beneath, as sanctum sanctorum. The ambulatory for parikrama (circumambulation) is under the canopy of leaves of the tree. This is how Tilinga Mandir stands apart.
The existing RCC Bell structure of the shrine is simply a Mandap or congregation hall representing an imagery of the name of the temple, designed and executed by us, under an initiative of District Administration.
Since the sanctum of the temple is at the bottom of the tree, the plinth level of the Mandap had to be kept as low as the ground itself but the splendour of the Mandap lies above the roof where the RCC-Bells rise creating a sensational formation against the tree and sky.
